Vanlig skorv

Common scab

This conditions entails that more or less extensive patches of the tuber are rough or scaly. Depending on the nature of the scab, the condition is known variously as deep scab, smooth or hump scab. Radiation fungi of the Streptomyces family cause the disease.

The symptom is the result of the repeated rejection and new formation of corky tissue in the affected areas. Susceptibility is thought to be greatest before the tuber reaches a diameter of about 2 cm. High pH and dry soil lead to more severe attack.

The disease is transmitted chiefly by infected soil. Experiments carried out in Holland shows that common scab is best combated by continuos irrigation for four weeks from the formation of the tubers.
